The Queenstown section of the pre-read pack for the NZTA Board's 12 June 2026 strategic transport planning workshop. It sets out Queenstown's challenges, a 'balanced hybrid' preferred strategic approach and phasing. For the Frankton to Town Centre corridor it states 'Long term: Offline PT (e.g. gondola) is the only remaining viable option'. It estimates the GDP and tax impact of a 0.5% a year reduction in visitor growth at NPV $5.4b over 40 years.

Key figures

  • 0.5% p.a. reduction in visitor growth: NPV $5.4b over 40 years (p.5)
  • 83,500 peak-day visitors by 2055, up from 48,000 (p.5)
  • Time of Use could reduce volumes by 10-15% (p.9)

Rapid transit

Mass rapid transit means light rail, gondola/cable car, bus rapid transit and similar dedicated rapid-transit technologies. It does not include ordinary bus services or ferries.

Substantive. Discusses, assesses, recommends or programmes mass rapid transit.

Describes offline public transport (e.g. gondola) as the only remaining viable long-term option for the Frankton to Town Centre corridor.

The two-corridor slide lists, for corridor 1 (Frankton to Town Centre), 'Short term: Bus for local access; interim safety, access and capacity improvements' and 'Long term: Offline PT (e.g. gondola) is the only remaining viable option' (p.8). For corridor 2 (Jack's Point to Arrow Junction) it lists 'Long term: Offline PT when demand exceeds bus capacity; potential additional river crossing to south (not east)'.
