Light rail in Queenstown: what has been studied
Light rail appears in Queenstown planning documents as one of several possible forms of mass rapid transit between Frankton and the town centre, usually alongside a gondola and bus rapid transit:
- The 2018 Town Centre Spatial Framework sought to "future proof" for light rail and/or mass rapid transit linking the town centre and Queenstown Airport (QTS-013).
- The 2018–2028 Ten Year Plan noted that options being explored for a Frankton–Queenstown mass rapid transit solution included light rail and a gondola (QTS-014).
- An April 2019 business case workshop memo concluded that public transport should include new corridors served by "gondolas or light rail/bus rapid transit" (QTS-044).
None of the record summaries in this archive describes a detailed assessment or cost estimate for light rail in Queenstown. For the wider rapid transit evidence, including the gondola options that were assessed and costed, see Queenstown rapid transit (e.g. gondola).
