Queenstown Airport Siting Study

Published by QAC on its engagement site our.queenstownairport.com/master-plan (archived document list). Hosted copy from a third-party mirror, as QAC no longer hosts it.

Arup completed this high-level desktop study for Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) in April 2017, alongside the master plan. It looked at whether an alternative or second airport could take the forecast passenger growth (pp3–4). It scanned 20 locations, shortlisted three potential sites (p5) and assessed dual operations with Wānaka as well as new Code E airports with 3,000 m runways at Wānaka/Hāwea Downs and Mossburn/Five Rivers (pp10–12). It concluded that a dual-airport model with Wānaka as the second site was the more viable option, and recommended further studies (p3).

Key figures

  • 20 locations scanned; 3 shortlisted (p5)
  • Wānaka dual-airport layout assumed 1,800 m runway (p10)
  • New Code E airport options assumed 3,000 m runway (pp11–12)
  • Dual airport model with Wānaka preferred (p3)
