The 2007 plan – near perfect prediction

In 2007 the Wakatipu Transportation Strategy forecast bumper to bumper traffic on Frankton Road in 2026. Turns out it's easier to predict the future than change it. Studying past reports helps us refine our modelling, make better investment choices and build on the evidence rather than recreating it.

Wakatipu Transportation Strategy, November 2007

In November 2007, QLDC, the Otago Regional Council and Transit New Zealand published the Wakatipu Transportation Strategy. Its cover warned that if nothing was done, by 2026 Frankton Road would carry bumper-to-bumper traffic averaging 20 km/h. Its plan to 2026 included bus lanes in both directions on Frankton Road, a bus every four minutes, park-and-ride at Frankton and Gorge Road, a ferry, and a 20% shift of car trips to public transport. It is now 2026. Frankton Flats roads and a new bridge were built. Most of the public transport measures were not.
