Vision Beyond 2050 - A unique place. An inspiring future | He Wāhi Tūhāhā. He Āmua Whakaohooho

QLDC's community vision, 'A unique place. An inspiring future', sets eight vision statements, each with community outcomes, that the document says 'underpin everything we do'. Transport sits under Zero carbon communities: public transport as 'the cleanest, greenest, innovative choice for district-wide connectivity', and active travel as part of 'an accessible and safe network for all'.

What the document says

Vision Beyond 2050 is the Queenstown Lakes District community vision, titled 'A unique place. An inspiring future | He Wāhi Tūhāhā. He Āmua Whakaohooho'. This hosted copy is QLDC's designed 11-page edition (PDF dated September 2022). The vision was adopted in 2019. Page 1 says the community aspires to 'hold true to the values that collectively define what is unique about Queenstown Lakes District' and that 'these vision statements underpin everything we do'. The eight statements are: 1 Thriving people | Whakapuāwai Hapori - 'Ours is a community with a strong heart and whānau roots that run deep.' 2 Living Te Ao Māori | Whakatinana i te ao Māori - 'Ours is a district that realises Te Tiriti o Waitangi and champions equity for all our people, now and into the future.' 3 Opportunities for all | He ōhaka taurikura - 'Our district is a place of social, environmental and technological enterprise.' 4 Breathtaking creativity | Whakaohooho Auahataka - 'Surrounded by the endless inspiration of our landscapes, ours is a place that nurtures the arts, culture and the spirit of invention.' 5 Deafening dawn chorus | Waraki - 'Our ecosystems flourish and are predator-free under our kaitiakitanga.' (p1 summary says 'under our guardianship') 6 Zero carbon communities | Parakore hapori - 'From Makarora to Kingston, our district sets the standard for regenerative, low-impact living, working and travel.' 7 Disaster-defying resilience | He Hapori Aumangea - 'Queenstown Lakes is a place that is ready and prepared for every emergency.' 8 Pride in sharing our places | Kia noho tahi tātou katoa - 'Our district is a place where our quality of life is enhanced by growth through innovation and thoughtful management.' Pages 2 to 9 each give one statement with three to five community outcomes and a note on its design motif. Transport is addressed directly under Zero carbon communities (p8): 'Our public transport is the cleanest, greenest, innovative choice for district-wide connectivity' and 'Active travel is an integral part of an accessible and safe network for all of our people', alongside low-impact 'travel' in the headline statement. Related outcomes are an accessible, barrier-free district (p2), technology connecting people 'locally, regionally and globally' (p4), resilient infrastructure (p9) and 'shared values not volume' (p10). The document does not name modes beyond public transport and active travel, and it does not mention mass rapid transit, the airport or specific projects. It is a values and outcomes framework with no actions, targets or figures. QLDC's Strategic Framework page presents these as the district's community outcomes.
