Part of: Rapid transit evidence →
One-page image extract of section 4.1 'Programme overview' of the Queenstown Integrated Transport Programme Business Case (Version 4, 16 June 2017). It records that stakeholders selected the Balanced Public Transport and Active Modes Focus programme as the recommended programme, and lists its core elements: completing planned infrastructure upgrades; bus priority on SH6A, 'a Mass Rapid Transit (gondola)' and an extensive water taxi network; active travel investment including an extra Shotover River crossing; improved public transport routes, frequency and fares; Mobility as a Service and workplace travel plans; a parking strategy; and town centre pedestrianisation. It also lists QLDC activities outside the formal programme.
What the document says
This single page is printed page 72 (PDF page 73) of the Queenstown Integrated Transport Programme Business Case (QITPBC), Version 4, dated 16 June 2017 and prepared for the NZ Transport Agency, now NZTA (Waka Kotahi). It states that in the final workshop stakeholders confirmed actions, an initial implementation timeline and optimal investment, and selected the 'Balanced Pubic [sic] Transport and Active Modes Focus' programme. Core elements are grouped as supply (planned upgrades such as the SH6 Kawarau Falls Bridge and SH6/6A interim upgrade; bus priority on SH6A, a Mass Rapid Transit (mass rapid transit) and an extensive water taxi network; active travel investment including an additional Shotover River crossing), productivity (improved public transport routes, frequency and fares with improved infrastructure; Mobility as a Service and workplace travel plans) and demand (a comprehensive parking strategy; pedestrianisation of the town centre). QLDC activities outside the formal programme include reviewing the District Plan, increasing town centre density and developing a Network Operating Framework; the list continues on the next page, which is not included. No costs or timing appear on this page; see QITPBC for those.
Mass rapid transit: The page names 'a Mass Rapid Transit (gondola)' as a core supply element of the recommended programme, alongside SH6A bus priority and a water taxi network.
Rapid transit
Mass rapid transit means light rail, gondola/cable car, bus rapid transit and similar dedicated rapid-transit technologies. It does not include ordinary bus services or ferries.
Substantive. Discusses, assesses, recommends or programmes mass rapid transit.
Lists mass rapid transit as a core element of the Queenstown Integrated Transport Programme Business Case recommended programme.
The extract's only MRT reference is in the list of core supply elements: 'Increased public transport reliability and choice through addition of bus priority on SH6A corridor, a Mass Rapid Transit (gondola) and an extensive water taxi network' (p.1, printed p.72 of QITPBC). Cost, timing and the MRT route are not on this page; the full QITPBC describes the corridor as running from Frankton to the town centre.
